When you first hear the name of this island, it might bring to mind the scene in Finding Nemo where the pelican, Nigel, tells Marlin and Dory to hop inside his mouth if they want to live. You won’t find Nemo here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look.

Although you won’t find the cast of this Disney Pixar film on Pelican Island, but you will find other attractions that’ll satisfy all ages.

Pelican Island is located not far from the coast of Galveston, Texas. It’s a fascinating destination that’s known for its nature and maritime significance. The island is connected to Galveston by a short bridge, and, aside from a boat, is the only way to reach this peaceful escape. Pelican Island has plenty to explore for those who appreciate maritime history and the beauty of the Gulf Coast.

One of the island’s main attractions, Seawolf Park, is a must if you’re interested in maritime history. The park is home to the USS Cavalla, a World War II-era submarine, and the USS Stewart, one of the only three remaining destroyer escorts in the country. You can tour these historic vessels and see what life was like for sailors during the war. Seawolf Park has plenty of quiet spots for picnics, and a small fishing pier with views of the channel and passing vessels.

Pelican Island is also home to Texas A&M University’s Galveston campus, which plays an important role in marine education and research. The campus island life is a vibrant one, with students and researchers studying the Gulf’s diverse marine ecosystem and the island’s variety of bird species. Birdwatchers, take note: this is a popular spot to catch a glimpses of coastal and migratory birds (yes, even pelicans) in their natural habitat.

Pelican Island isn’t big, but it offers a “big” experience combining historical exploration, nature’s beauty, and multiple educational opportunities. Whether you want to watch ships coming and going through the channel or just enjoy a quiet afternoon in nature, Pelican Island is a great addition to any Galveston visit. You won’t find Nemo here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look.
