Your world will literally be turned upside down when you come upon the Rumah Terbalik, whose name really means Upside Down House.
The Rumah Terbalik is the first one to be built in Southeast Asia, joining the other four topsy turvy structures around the world, three of which are in Europe and one is in Japan.
Rumah Terbalik opened its doors to the public in 2012, and has continued attracting visitors ever since from all across the world. If you’re in the area, this is one house that is difficult to miss, as the entire structure has been flipped upside down. Yes, the roof peak “balances” on the ground while the floor points to the sky. All of the furniture and appliances in the home are hanging above your head as you step inside. If that isn’t alarming enough the car that is parked in the garage is upside down, too. It may all be a bit alarming and disorienting at first, but then the fascination of this feat will take over. It is a true architectural accomplishment and, as such, has been included in Malaysia’s version of the Guinness Book, the Malaysia Book of Records, as the first house of its type in their nation. While there, you can grab a bite to eat at the Upside Down Café and check out the neat souvenirs at their gift shop, as well. You can self-guide, or opt for the guided tour which takes you throughout the property.
The newest attraction on the property is the 3D Wonder Museum. All of the art in this museum magically transforms before your eyes into immersive three dimensional environments. This attractions is not only the biggest three dimensional art display in Malaysia, but it is the only one whose focus is on educating the public regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems, and the earth’s natural resources.
The Rumah Terbalik and the 3D Wonder Museum is open every day from 7 am to 7 pm, except on Malaysian holidays. Calling ahead to +60 88-260 263 is best if you are new to the area. You can reach the home and attraction by taking Mile 21 Road into Tamparuli. It takes about forty minutes, and arriving by taxi can be the easiest means of arrival; however, if you opt for taxi service, be sure to arrange your return trip beforehand, as taxis are not always waiting at this location.
